Director, Hower House Museum
Bio
The Hower House Museum is an 1871 Victorian Mansion built in the Second Empire Italianate style. The Hower home was built by John Henry and Susan Youngker Hower; Mr. Hower was one of the first industrialists in Akron, arriving in 1865 from rural Doylestown, Ohio. The home was designed by reknowned architect, Jacob Snyder, best known as the co-developer of the "Akron Plan" for Sunday Schools and churches.
Three generations of the Hower Family resided in the mansion for over 100 years before it was deeded to The University of Akron in 1970; it was opened as a historic home museum in the mid-1980s. The Hower collection was owned, used, and collected by the Hower Family over three generations and includes furnishings, artwork, textiles, and horse-drawn vehicles. Many objects were collected in their world travels.
